Hamidi Hadi’s second solo exhibition, Alun, displays the artist’s continuing journey in his search for the ‘essence of life’. In his quest to capture the intangible in his works, Hamidi challenges himself through experimentation with new mediums and varying his layering of paint. He has developed entirely new techniques and progressed from his last exhibition ("Indelible Markings" - 2005) and has started using industrial materials and aluminium paints in this new body of work.

Having moved to his new studio, the artist has been able to express himself on a much larger scale. This body of 16 large canvases, display the artist’s mastery in the control of his medium. Combining a host of paints, ranging from oil to enamel, the new works are not only breathtakingly beautiful, but also manage to evoke a range of emotions. Although the marks and drips on his unprimed canvases appear somewhat random, there is in fact an element of control and deliberation throughout the entire process.

For the artist, these paintings are a departure from his initial series of works, which drew inspiration from the environment. This time they are more personal. They revolve around his feelings and emotions - about the beauty of life. As he says, “My Alun paintings are akin to the ‘crystalizing of my breath.”

The paintings demonstrate Hamidi's courage to confront these new materials head on and his desire to push boundaries in his continuing journey as one of Malaysia's most exciting abstract painters.
