In September 2005, Wei-Ling Gallery opens its doors to a new space in KL Sentral. An extension of the current Townhouse Gallery, Wei-Ling Gallery will be situated in a converted pre-war building in edgy, fast-paced Brickfields. The new gallery will be an exciting art venue unlike anything ever seen in Kuala Lumpur as contemporary artwork will be showcased within a resurrected office building that was destroyed in a fire in 2004.
Wei-Ling Gallery is named after Lim Wei-Ling, who, together with Yohan Rajan established Townhouse Gallery in 2002 in a Bangsar townhouse. Through the years, Townhouse Gallery has built upon the owner’s passion for and interest in the arts, and therefore the artists that have been represented are those that she believes and invests in. Promising contemporary Malaysian artists who are serious in their pursuit of art are featured prominently, with internationally renowned guest artists from overseas gracing the impressive artist list.
To mark it’s arrival, Wei-Ling Gallery brings together some of the most innovative names in the region for its inaugural show “18@8” in a rare convergence of artistic talent. From figurative impressionism and abstract expressionism to pop art and multi-media - paintings, sculptures, and ceramics will be displayed side by side at this momentous show. Leading contemporary Malaysian artists Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Chin Kong Yee, Chong Choon Woon, Choy Chun Wei, Ivan Lum, Jailani Abu Hassan, Jolly Koh, J. Anurendra, Kim Ng, Kow Leong Kiang, Lim Wei-Ling, Multhalib Musa, Sabri Idrus, Umibaizurah Mahir and Yau Bee Ling come together with renowned Pakistani sculptor Amin Gulgee and eminent Australian artist Stewart MacFarlane in this unprecedented exhibition. This show promises to be one of the most important exhibitions of the year.

In commemoration of the opening of the new space, a Special Edition book featuring the 18@8 exhibition and the artists involved will be published. This book will be the first of it’s kind as it will feature the who’s-who in Contemporary Malaysian art, together with two internationally renowned artists.
In their continuing commitment and support of the Arts, HSBC will be the presenting sponsor of the “18@8” exhibition and the Special Edition book. Having recently launched HSBC in the Arts, the bank is taking a focused approach in the preservation of cultural assets in Malaysia by encouraging the development of artistic talents, in particular young artists.
