Wei-Ling Gallery announces its participation in the 10th anniversary of Art Jakarta. This will be the first time that the gallery will be partaking in this fair where they will be presenting a selection of sculptures by the prominent Indonesian artist, Dadang Christanto, as well as paintings by two Malaysian women artists, Cheong Kiet Cheng and Yau Bee Ling.

Born in Central Java into a family of Chinese descent, Dadang Christanto portrays and sensitively evokes reflections on human suffering, based on both national grief and personal trauma. Throughout his career and through a widely diverse body of work, he honors the countless victims of political violence and crimes against humanity, His multi-disciplinary works are imbued with an aura of silence, precisely referencing the political silence that enveloped those injustices. His unbounded practice not only transcends specific historical and political roots, but also leads to a wider meditation on the nature of suffering itself. His first solo exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, ‘Missing’, will be held at Wei-Ling Contemporary, from 6 September – 4 November 2018.

Cheong Kiet Cheng highlights the relationship between human and nature. Although the fictional human and animal characters that she creates seem to convey love and beauty, signs of tensions are also present, as if to emphasize that imperfection is unavoidable. The romantic quality of her artworks is a result of her own personal feelings towards her environment, with inspirations from literature, poetry, music and theatrical drama.

Yau Bee Ling is regarded as one of the most powerful contemporary painters in Malaysia today, known for her multi-layered style in painting. Through her solo exhibition, ‘The Women’ at Wei-Ling Contemporary, she depicted the images of women in various groupings, and explored how she has evolved as an individual –encompassing the different aspirations, relationships, and inner manifestations of her own role as a woman and mother.
