Through Rose-Tinted Glasses
Group Exhibition

‘Is this the answer to living one’s life, in order to not be bogged down by the mundane of the everyday, the bombardment of negativity from the media at large, the atrocities that are happening in various parts of the world, things that we are exposed to, yet have little control over? More often than not, people are prone to being affected by the negativity that surrounds them but perhaps, by looking at the cup half full, it might help us to cope better with the situation at large.’

– Wei-Ling Lim

Twelve artists have been selected for the participation in this exhibition, whose works range from painting, sculpture and glass to multi-media and video work: Annabelle Ng, Anurendra Jegadeva, Cheng Yen Pheng, Cheong Kiet Cheng, Chin Kong Yee, Diana Lui, Fairuz Sulaiman, Kim Ng, Ruzzeki Harris, Sean Lean, TOPY and Yim Yen Sum.

The pieces presented in the ‘Through Rose-Tinted Glasses’ exhibition refer to both personal and social issues that are significant to the artists’ lives. However, instead of simply criticizing the realities, these artists are challenged to look at the conditions with optimism – to apply a positive angle that could even expand to finding a solution. They have highlighted something that has affected them, in the hope showing the viewers a new perspective on the issue at hand – a fresher way of looking at the world and coping with its complexities.

Some of the works show hints of the future, as responses to the vision how the world should be. Their aim is not to passively wait for things to get better, but provoke discussions about the responsibility of shaping tomorrow. Seeing ‘optimism’ – whether utopic, artificial or not – as possibilities and potentials.

As Henri Matisse said, ‘There are always flowers to those who want to see them.’

Through Rose-Tinted Glasses will be showing from 6th December 2017 to 31st January 2018 at Wei-Ling Contemporary.
