Cage of Deliverance
Rajinder Singh

Wei-Ling Contemporary is pleased to present Cage of Deliverance, a solo exhibition by Rajinder Singh. This marks the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The first being …the ceiling floats away with a sigh.. in 2014.

Rajinder Singh was born in Ipoh, Perak and is now based in London. He has been in practice as a full time artist since 2003 when he had his first group exhibition Nascent: Beginning to be; curated by James Holdsworth in Singapore. Rajinder graduated with a PhD in Engineering & Mathematics in 1993 from Queen’s University Belfast, UK and a Master’s in Fine Arts from LASALLE, Singapore in 2010.

Rajinder Singh is a man who is aware of his imminent and unavoidable death. While many may shun away from the idea of realising one’s own passing, Rajinder instead focuses on preparing himself physically, spiritually and mentally. In order to do so, he finds himself dwelling into his past life searching for fragments of unanswered questions, the gods, rituals and ceremonies that he once practiced. In hopes that he may find some uplifting of spiritual burden, Rajinder decides to return to his past life in Malaysia where he stumbles upon elaborate displays of human spirit triumphant over flesh. He then uses it to construct vast cages that signify the tranquility, the obliviousness, of coming to terms with the acceptance of death.

Rajinder’s fascination with otherworldly subject matters comes from his background in Philosophy and Mathematics. Much like his previous exhibition with the gallery “…the ceiling floats away with a sigh..“, Rajinder based his works on the notion of spaces that distend from apertures and portals. Spaces such as the shrine, the temple, the prayer mat and etc. that are all located in the real world but are somehow connected to another distant and unknown realm.

Now, with his mind and body working together as one, Rajinder recalibrates himself as a final rite and preparation to move on into the afterlife. Haunted by a fragmentary, disintegrating body, Rajinder surrenders to the culturally authentic, to find unification in disunity or even to move beyond these paradigms to tranquility and peace.

Cage of Deliverance will begin showing from 20th August to 30th September 2016 at Wei Ling Contemporary.
