Catch: Familiar but thought provoking works
by Dennis Chua
WEI-Ling Gallery presents “Reality In Wonderland”, an exhibition of the latest works of contemporary artist Chin Kong Yee from Monday to July 30.
Chin’s thought-provoking images are inspired by his visits to Europe and Bali, and painted over the last year.
The images are permutations from his “experiments”.
Viewers who have travelled extensively may be treated to familiar sights.
Chin manipulates his images to create his very own “matrix in wonderland”. His paintings are, thus, realistic images injected with fantastical ingredients.
Since 2000, the artist has had his works exhibited around the world, including Romania’s Cluj-Napoca Art Museum.
Chin also won the prestigious Philip Morris Group of Companies Asean Art Competition in 2000. His works are in the collection of various organisations locally and abroad.
From Aug 3 to 27, the gallery will present “Panorama”, an exhibition of the works of artist and art lecturer Ivan Lam.
“Panorama” features Lam’s distinct style of painting which is a narration on contemporary issues and popular icons.
Lam excels in the use of synthetic polymer paint and his quality aesthetic paintings are infused with a nostalgic feel.
He has won multiple art awards in the last 12 years and his most famous painting “Three Buses” sold for HK$120,000 (RM56,000) at an auction in Hong Kong.
Wei-Ling Gallery is in Jalan Scott, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. Time: Noon to 7pm (Monday to Friday) and 10am to 5pm (Saturday). Call 03-2260-1106 or 2260-1107.
