The S.O.S series combines elements from religious symbolism, iconography and popular culture. Justin Lim’s works have taken on various styles. In this series, he combines his colour field dot paintings, painted in various layers of repetitive dripping, which he introduced in ‘The wall series (2007)’, and screen printing on perspex, which was introduced in his last solo exhibition entitled ‘Secret Identities (2010)’. Juxtaposing abstraction and figuration, this series explores subjects such as existence and religion in contemporary society. ‘ A painting is at times like an altar or a shrine. They can be celebrated, worshipped or even ridiculed. The cult imagery creates a dialogue between the idea of belief systems entwined with popular culture, and it’s relevance in our contemporary social context.’
