This year will be the Gallery\u2019s third engagement, the first in 2018 and followed by 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After a decade and a pandemic, Art Jakarta has become one of the most awaited art events in the city. Art Jakarta holds on to its main vision to be the Southeast-Asian focused art fair in Asia, and one of the most exciting art fairs in the region. It is hosted in the region\u2019s dynamic centre of Contemporary art and is always a stimulating international forum to serve the region\u2019s contemporary eco-system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For this year\u2019s installment, Wei-Ling Gallery will showcase works by artists Hamidi Hadi and Yau Bee Ling, two of Malaysia\u2019s most prominent image-makers whose riveting works are testaments to the vividness of life lived through brilliant scrutiny. Over the years, his practice has formally migrated from pictorial representation of the objective world, into abstraction and the synthesis of complex materials and methods, to describe his emotional and spiritual responses to the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He investigates the natural phenomenon of the world and uses this in his imaginary landscapes, through the application of industrial paint, resin, wax, linseed oil and charcoal in layers, allowing gravity and movement to create surface tension. As we contemplate his abstract works, we begin to connect the reference points that give us clues to the artist\u2019s inner landscape, and his contemplation of his place in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hamidi Hadi received the UOB Painting of the Year (Malaysia) &#8211; Bronze Award, Established Artist Category in 2018, the Bank Negara\u2019s Kijang Award in 2004 and the Philip Morris ASEAN Biennale Art Award in 2000. His works have also been collected by both public and private institutions and corporations. Amongst them are the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, Setia Berhad, and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. He has exhibited extensively both within Malaysia and on international platforms, with exhibitions in Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, China, the Philippines and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>YAU BEE LING (B. 1972)<\/strong><br \/>\nThroughout her 25 year career, Malaysian painter Yau Bee Ling\u2019s work has consistently echoed her observations on the world and reflect autobiographical themes. Her works are deeply personal and profound in their symbolism, as she struggles to reconcile the broad gambit of human experiences and the complex roles of contemporary women in present-day society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Highly regarded as one of the country\u2019s foremost painters, her work pays homage to a life lived. Over the years, Yau Bee Ling has moved from one identity to another: from single woman to wife to mother.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Through her works, she challenges and ponders the questions that inhabit her mind and soul. Each series of paintings are charged with their own distinctive energy, reflective of her state of mind, her emotional well-being and the way she perceives her place in the world at the time. Her works are therefore a cathartic process for her, as she struggles to reconcile the meaning of life, through the layering of and scraping back of paint, and colour, navigating her way through the twisting terrains of her paintings in the search for truth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bee Ling has exhibited extensively in exhibitions across China, Pakistan, Singapore, Bangladesh, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia and represented Malaysia at the Asian Art Biennial in Dhaka, Bangladesh and at the Fukuoka Triennale.
