Precious Little Pieces
Group Show
In March 2012, Wei Ling Gallery has invited a group of 30 artists, predominantly from Malaysia to participate in a group exhibition that celebrates art in the miniature. More and more we are accustomed to seeing things in large scale (the bigger the better, so to speak!) that very often we do not take the time to look closer at works.
In presenting this exhibition, we want to draw viewers into the artworks so that they take the time to look deeper into a work of art to really see it. For artists, this could mean presenting works on paper, sketches that they have worked on in another time of their lives, using mixed media like plastic sheets, matchboxes or old postcards, or even experimental works.
A work of fine art in miniature is a personal object that draws the viewer into an intimate, concentrated little world that is breathtaking in its execution. Every single detail including the scale of the subject matter and the brush strokes are miniaturized. As a result the immaculate details can only be viewed up close or with magnification. The term miniature relates first of all to technique and as an identification and only secondly to the size of a painting. This technique is a specialized means of producing a perfect balance of color and detail in a series of thinly applied layers of colors intended to reflect light, showing a high standard of design, and mastery of the chosen media and palette. There is a feeling of preciousness associated with the art form due in part to the fact that it can usually be held in the palm of your hand and displays finely detailed work in brilliant, colors.
This exhibition would be a brilliant opportunity for new collectors to visit the gallery to start a collection as for many of the artists this will be the first time they are presenting such small pieces in an exhibition.
