Kaleidoscopic Landscapes
Choy Chun Wei
In December Choy Chun Wei, the artist who has become synonymous with deconstructed collage paintings, features at Wei-Ling Gallery with his first solo exhibition, ‘Kaleidoscopic Landscapes ’.
A much-anticipated exhibition on the Malaysian contemporary art scene, Chun Wei has spent the last five years of his career building up towards this monumental solo.
The works in this exhibition are a major shift from his earlier pieces which concentrated more upon layering of found materials, and less upon colour. The new works have expanded into another realm with the introduction of moving perspectives and multiple dimensions, coupled with the use of vivid colours and cut outs from glossy magazines to reflect the materialism of our urban environment. Choy Chun Wei is one of Malaysia’s fast rising stars on the contemporary arts scene.
Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1973, Choy Chun Wei has made a name for himself with his unmistakable collage works. Since graduating in 1998 with a Graphic Design Degree (Honours) from the world-renowned Central Saint Martin’s School of Art, London, Choy’s art career has gone from strength to strength.
In 2003, he was awarded an Honourable Mention at the coveted Philip Morris Art Awards and in 2005 he was the recipient of the year-long Rimbun Dahan Residency. Most recently, it was announced that he had been selected as the artist for the prestigious Asian Artist Fellowship Grant and Residency bestowed by the Freeman Foundation,Vermont , USA for 2008.
Choy is a meticulous artist who executes each of his works painstakingly, taking the time to research and explore each medium before applying it ton his work . Drawing constant inspiration from his environment (from the repetitive facades of suburban and consumer-driven Malaysia to the vast abundance of the countryside) his immediate surroundings are ever-present in all his works. Throughout has career so far, Choy has continually developed this technique to achieve an original style of work that is distinctly his own.
