Artworks on Display a visual treat
by Ivan Loh

THE art exhibition with an eye-catching display was truly an eye-opening experience.
The exhibition, (EYE)-llusions, is a joint effort by Malaysia’s most exciting contemporary artist and photographer Chin Kong Yee and Volker Hamann, from Germany who is also a photographer, artist and sculptor who is well regarded in his country.

Interesting: Chin’s artwork entitled ‘Barcelona At Day’ is part of the display.

The two met at a wedding party in Malaysia in 2005 and realised that they shared similar ideologies and outlook towards their art. From that point onwards, they became friends and even held an exhibition together in Stuttgart in 2006.
Currently, their joint exhibition is being held at the Wei-Ling Gallery in Brickfields until May 10.
Wei-Ling Gallery director Lim Wei-Ling said the artworks showed viewers the way the artists “see” things.

Detailed: This painting by Chin is titled ‘Red Train’.

“Chin gets his inspiration from the environment surrounding him and his artworks on display are images from Europe,” she said.
“What makes Chin’s artworks special is that he always incorporates the time and movements from the environment into his artwork.
“His artworks also make viewers feel that they are at the scene of the artwork.”
“One piece of artwork may take around three to four months to complete, therefore it took Chin around two and a half years to prepare the eight pieces of artworks for the exhibition.

Hamann, meanwhile, took photographs during his stay in Malaysia in 2005.
He then manipulated the photographs using picture-editing software and created illusions that are visually arresting.
“Volker’s artworks were specially printed on canvas,” Lim said.
