In a place of wonder
Kim Ng, one of the country’s leading names in contemporary art returns to Wei-Ling Gallery this June with his 6th solo exhibition entitled In A Place of Wonder.
Kim Ng regards himself as an observer and recorder, continually utilising the busy city streets as his long-standing source of inspiration, maintaining his theory that in order to understand society one needs to step out into the streets and observe the realities of the world. Having been absent from Malaysia for 11 years between 1991 to 2002, the artist returned to discover drastic changes within our local surroundings, consequently forming his interest in this particular subject matter. Upon capturing images of people, objects and scenes within public spaces, the artist’s works are achieved through the employment of his personal methods of juxtaposing these images to construct a “new place”.
With this upcoming exhibition, Kim Ng is set to detach himself from his well-established stamp as a printmaker and be recognised purely as a maker, holding true to his belief that as an artist, one needs to evolve and be able to make use of different materials to form various ideas or stories. In a bid to advance through different art forms, the artist’s latest body of work will incorporate an exciting amalgam of textures and mediums intended to enhance the overall viewing experience of his audience.
To date, in addition to having shown 5 solo exhibitions within Malaysia, Kim Ng has participated in a vast number of group exhibitions both locally and abroad in countries such as the UK and China.
